I have finally saved up enough (sold some surfboards & fins on ebay) to buy a stand up paddle board. I have been wanting to get one since I first saw Laird on one a few years ago but none of my friends seemed interested, but when I read Lairds book for the 3rd time I decided to jump in & get involved.
I had tried a few different boards over the last year from McTavish, Naish, NSP, but I finally settled on a 10ft Simon Anderson model from East Coast Stand Up Paddle.
I had tried a 9’8” x 30” Simon in the surf the week before but struggled a bit with the width, it was just not long & wide enough for this big unit, but I loved the way it felt once I caught a wave. So I went a bit bigger with a 10’ x 32”.
I can’t believe how easy it is in flat water but then how hard it is in the surf. You’ve got to give to the guys that can throw them around like a short board, I struggled just to catch a few 2 footers.
I guess it is even harder because as surfers we think we should already be really good at it but it takes a fair bit of practice.
I’ll keep you updated.
